Medaka is a freshwater fish and it is about 4cm long. It is said to be the smallest freshwater fish in Japan. Athough wild medaka fish are designated as an endangered species in Japan, there are also medaka fish that has been bread for ornamental purposes.
Ornamental Medaka have body shapes and bright colors that cannot be seen in nature and it makes them as beautiful as tropical fish. They are collectively called “Japanese Medaka” to distinguish them from wild medaka, and(no need to add are) currently very popular in Japan as excellent ornamental fish alongside goldfish and tropical fish.
Japanese Medaka is very easy to look after compared to other ornamental fish. All you need is water and a container to raise it. It is resistant to change in quality and temperature of the water, so it can be kept both indoors and outdoors.
Tropical fish often require an aquarium, air, filter, lighting etc but Japanese Medaka doesn’t require any of these. Also it hibernates during the cold months so it doesn’t need a heater either.
Currently, we are aware that there are over 1000 types of Japanese Medaka(10 types of single coloured ones and also multi-coloured ones). It comes in a variety of shapes so some are with short or thin bodies, those with long or short fins, and those with unusual eye shapes.
There are also 45 types of characteristics in 7 different groups, and 51 different kinds to express their additional characters.

The story of Japanese Medaka is still young and currently more than 1000 different varieties have been identified.
Many of which were created within the last 10 years. It is easy to breed and if the environment is right, a male and female fish can give girth to hundreds of young ones.
People crossbreed different types of medaka in Japan in order to produce with the body color and characteristics that they like. There’s a great satisfaction in seeing your unique fish being created.
Japanse medaka can be enjoyed on their own or in combination with other Japanese ”和wa “arts and interiors such as Bonsai or Kakejiku. Try creating Japanese vista of your own.

Our store “Medaka no yakata” specialises in Japanese Medaka and was established in 2000. At that time, there were only 20 different kinds of Japanese Medaka and only few people had encountered them. Since then, we have been working hard to create many other varieties.
Our first ever Japanese Medaka creation is called “Pure Black Medaka (Kurobee)”, then “Pure black Golden (Rikyu)”, next is “Amber medaka” and “Pure White Medaka”. In 2004, our creation called “Yang Guifei (vermillion killifish)” became very popular and people started to notice the variety. They became a big hit since then and the number of people who are knowledgeable in Japanese Medaka has increased significantly.
To date, we have created over 100 new varieties and still continue to work hard to blossom. We “Medaka no yakata” are the pioneer of Japanese Medaka!

We have four professionals who have been working hard to breed Japanese Medaka for over 20 years. Two are Japan Medaka Association’s judges and they breed, raise and select highly accurate fish for the public.
